Gagne's Nine Events

Gagne created a nine-step process for people to use when designing learning experiences with the goal of maximum engagement and retention. The steps are gain attention, inform learners of objectives, stimulate recall of prior learning, present stimulus, provide learner guidance, elicit performance, provide feedback, assess performance, and enhance retention and transfer.

In 1965, Gagné – a cognitivist – believed in five major categories of learning: verbal information, intellectual skills, cognitive strategies, motor skills, and attitudes. He said that different conditions (both internal and external) were necessary for each type of learning. Gagné created a nine-step process for people to use when designing learning experiences with the goal of maximum engagement and retention. He divided the steps into three phases and each step was connected to a cognitive process. These are outlined below:
